Access to broadband in rural communities was again identified as a priority in the 2021 Blueprint for the Blue Line. These two recent news stories by North Country Public Radio highlight the need.

After Pocket Veto, Cuomo Will Propose Legislation to Study Broadband Access in NY
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has vetoed legislation that would have required the state to review access to high-speed internet, or broadband, in New York, and study the affordability and reliability of those services, saying he’ll propose a similar measure in the coming weeks.

Cuomo had until the end of the month to act on the bill, which had near-unanimous support in the state Legislature, but let it die in the form of a pocket veto.

Missed broadband connections could mean missed opportunities for North Country
One effect of the coronavirus pandemic has been more people moving from cities to more affordable, greener areas where they can work remotely.

That description fits the North Country to a “T”, and presents an opportunity for the region as it continues to fight population declines.
